SAINT LEO, Fla. – After dropping three straight games to two top ten teams, the Saint Leo baseball team will get a second chance in 2010 against the Buccaneers of Barry University.  SLU will play its second three-game series against Barry starting Friday at 6:00 p.m. and finishing off on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Southard Stadium.

Last Time Out…
Lions are coming off of a tough five game stretch, with their lone win coming against the No. 1 Florida Southern Mocs last Saturday.  Behind pitcher Marshall Stalvey, the Lions won the second game of the series against the Mocs 3-2.  SLU dropped the next three games with a walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh to the Mocs in the series-clincher, a one run loss to Warner University and a tough loss to the No. 6 University of Tampa Spartans.

Offensively...
Ryan Powers and JC Suarez are leading the team in batting average, both are hitting well over .360.  Powers and Suarez counted for 91 of the Lions 341 hits and 24 of the 72 doubles.  Powers’ remarkable 42 runs batted in leads the Lions’ roster.  Outfielders Suarez and Dustin Brown, have combined for 24 of the Lions 62 stolen bases.  Brown is two stolen bases shy of the SSC leader, Wade Kirkland, who has 12.

Pitching…
On the mound for the Lions on Friday night will be junior Matt Smith who is making his 10th start of the season with a record of 4-4.  Smith has tossed the most innings on the staff this year with 48.  Opponents’ batting average against Smith is .249 with 34 strikeouts.  Saturday’s planned starters are Marshall Stalvey and Aaron Brandt.  Stalvey tossed a complete game victory against No. 1 Florida Southern on Saturday, March 20th .  In nine innings he struck out five while allowing two runs on nine hits.  He defeated one of the top pitchers in the conference, Eddie Sipple in the showdown.  Brandt has pitched well this year with a record of 3-1 in seven starts.  His ERA is 5.18 in 33 innings.  Although allowing 19 earned runs, he struck out 21 batters. 

About Barry…
The Bucs are in third place in the SSC with a conference record of 4-2 and an overall record of 19-7.  Barry is on a nine game winning streak, scoring 49 runs in their last two series.  Third basemen Matt Petty was named SSC Player of the Week as he batted .542 with 18 RBI and 12 runs scored.  The Bucs have four players that are batting .400 or better, Ryan Garcia (.440), Drew Dwelly (.438), Yas Gutierrez (.411) and Matt Petty (.400).  Garcia is leading the conference in hitting ahead of Tampa’s Mike Schwartz.  The Bucs’ pitching was ranked second in the conference at the beginning of the week with a 3.94 while tabbing 17 wins in 201 innings and striking out 185. 
 
Last Time vs. Barry…
The Lions could not catch a break when they were swept by the Bucs in three games.  Although the games were close, the Lions could not prevail as they lost 6-4, 5-2 and 8-7.  Starter Matt Smith tossed 106 pitches in seven innings allowing five earned runs on six hits.  In the first game, the Lions were able to pull within two runs in the ninth but couldn’t overcome the six runs to pick up the victory.  The doubleheader saw 22 runs scored between 14 pitchers.  In the nightcap, the Lions saw a four run lead slip away in the ninth when the Bucs scored five runs to win the back end of the doubleheader.
