SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo (4-7) baseball team will look to rebound from a 13-5 loss to No. 15 University of Tampa on Wednesday night as the Lions play host to SSC foe Rollins College (6-6) in a three game Sunshine State Conference series starting Friday night at 6:00 p.m. on the Thomas B. Southard Stadium diamond. The doubleheader will be played Saturday starting at 3:00 p.m.

A Look Back on the Week…

After a heroic come from behind, 14-13 win over NAIA Warner University on Tuesday, the Lions struggled to continue their winning ways when they dropped the Wednesday night, non-conference tilt to Tampa.  The Spartans got a commanding seven run lead in the first inning which proved to be too much for the Lions to recover from.  The Lions lone star was first baseman JC Suarez who was 3-for-5 and one run scored.

Offensive Leaders…

On the year, the Lions have four players batting over .300.  Ryan Brnovich heads the Lions staff in offense with a .378 average behind 14 hits, four doubles, a triple and a home run.  Brnovich is slugging a .662 which is the best on the Lions roster.  Beacon, NY native, Ryan Powers is ten points behind Brnovich in hitting with a batting average of .368.  Powers leads the Lions in doubles with five and runs batted in with 12.  The lead off hitting Suarez is doing his job at the top spot with an on-base percentage of .367 and is tied for the Lions’ lead in stolen bases with four.  Sophomore Dustin Brown rounds out the top four batting .311 with 14 hits, and four stolen bases.  Brown, the reigning SSC Freshman of the Year, leads the Lions with two triples in 2010.

Defense…

To start the week, SLU is second in the conference in fielding, with a fielding percentage of .965 behind the University of Tampa.  Saint Leo has turned a Sunshine State Conference high of 11 double plays in 2010.

Rollins…

Coming from Winter Park, Fla, the Tars are37-31 all-time versus the Lions.  Rollins comes into the three game series with Saint Leo having won their last series with Saint Thomas University.   Rollins pitching staff is third in the conference, having an earned run average of 4.30 and striking out 58 batters.

This weekend’s series marks the first Sunshine State Conference matchups for both teams in 2010.
