SAINT LEO, Fla. – A sixth inning grand slam from the bat of Bobby Munoz helped propel the Saint Leo baseball team to a dominating 7-0 win over Rollins College in non-conference action at a chilly and breezy Thomas B. Southard Stadium on Tuesday night.
Munoz’s base-clearing shot capped off a scoring night where the Lions plated two runs in the first when three consecutive hits, including an RBI double by Dustin Brown, gave SLU an early lead.
The Lions (14-27) managed another run in the third, but it could have been a big inning for Saint Leo as they loaded the bases with one out. Unfortunately, the Green & Gold could only plate the lone run before the inning ended by way of a 4-6-3 double play.
Those early runs were all that the Saint Leo pitching staff would need. Led by Matt Smith, the Saint Leo hurlers would shut the Tars out, allowing seven hits and fanning eight Rollins players.
Smith (4-2) would pick up the win as he tossed seven complete, allowing six hits and a walk. He also struck out six Tars en route to his fourth win of the season and stop the Lions' winless streak at eight games.
Rollins (22-15) would send five pitchers to the mound while starter Danny Clark (2-4) would earn the decision for the visitors from Winter Park.
Saint Leo will now head to Tampa for a Sunshine State Conference series with the Spartans scheduled to start on Friday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be carried live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
