MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team found the going tough in South Florida, as the host Barry University Buccaneers took both ends of a Saturday, Sunshine State Conference doubleheader as they won the first game, 11-1, and then won the nightcap, 7-1.
The Bucs (31-4, 11-1 SSC) started strong in game one, as a double down the right field line in the first inning scored the first run of the game.
The Lions could not get a run across the plate until the top of the sixth inning, when a walk, accompanied by two Barry errors, brought the score to 3-1.
With Barry pushing the lead to 5-1 entering the eighth, a six-run frame by Barry put the game out of reach.
In game two, the Lions (13-27, 4-11 SSC) opened the scoring in the second inning when consecutive doubles by Aaron McLamar and Dustin Brown put a lone run on the board, but Barry would respond over the course of the next few innings.
The Bucs tallied runs over the next four innings, with two-run RBI hits to help Barry score seven runs over that span.
Aaron Brandt (0-4) and J.C Suarez (2-4) were the pitchers of record in the Lions’ losses.
Saint Leo will return home for another mid-week non-conference game as they will host Rollins College on Tuesday evening. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Thomas B. Southard Stadium and will be carried live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
