SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team did not have an answer on Friday night as they fell 9-4 to visiting second-ranked Florida Southern College in the opening game of a Sunshine State Conference series at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
Southern pounded out 12 hits, including four home runs in posting their 26th win of the season.
The Mocs (26-5, 6-1 SSC), riding a seven-game winning streak, came into Saint Leo with hot bats as they dropped three runs on the Lions before SLU had their first opportunity at-bat. FSC saw Will Cherry hit the first of his two home runs of the game over the center field wall to get the 3-0 lead.
The Lions (13-21, 4-6 SSC) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first frame when Jonathan Duncan’s fielder’s choice scored a run and a Dustin Brown single through the right side plated Duncan.
The Mocs would score two more runs in the top of the third off of another Cherry blast to put the score at 5-2 .
The visitors from Lakeland, Fla. scored single runs in the sixth and seventh as a result of solo homers, and a two-spot in the eighth while Saint Leo was only able to plate single runs in the fifth and seventh for the loss.
Both teams would send three pitchers to the mound on the evening with both starters picking up the decisions. Max Russell tossed six complete to improve to 5-0 while Jeff Bloomer went 6.1 as he fell to 1-1.
Brown and Bobby Munoz both went 2-for-4 in the loss and each earned a lone RBI.
Both teams continue the Sunshine State Conference series on Saturday with doubleheader action from Thomas B. Southard Stadium getting underway at 1:00 p.m.
