SAINT LEO, Fla. – After 18 innings of action on Friday night, the Saint Leo baseball team could not answer the offensive output of visiting Bentley University as the Falcons upended the Lions 10-6 at Thomas B. Southard Stadium on warm and sunny Saturday afternoon.

The visitors from Waltham, Mass. got to starting Saint Leo pitcher J.C. Suarez in the second inning after a Lion fielding error kept the inning going.  The Falcons would plate two runs in the frame and then scored two more in the third as another SLU miscue saw the Lions face a 4-0 deficit.

Another two-run Bentley fifth inning put the Lions down 6-0, but Saint Leo answered with some offense in the bottom of the frame.

The Lions managed to capitalize on a Bentley miscue to load the bases before sophomore Anthony Santa roped a single up the middle to score two Saint Leo runners.  Another fielding error and a run-scoring double play had the Lions to within a pair of runs at 6-4 after five innings.

Both team scored a lone run in the sixth, with the Lions’ run coming courtesy of a J.D. Cook homer, but Bentley would shut the door on the Lions with a three-run eighth inning.

A leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly had the Falcons in good shape early in the eighth.  After another double and a ground out that advanced the runner to third, consecutive Bentley singles, with a walk sandwiched in between, helped the visitors jump out to a 10-5 advantage.

A home run to left field off the bat of Eugene Garnett in the bottom of the frame was too little, too late for Saint Leo as they dropped their first game in four contests.

Five Lions had multiple hits as Cook led the way going 2-for-3 with the round-tripper, an RBI and two runs.  Dale Slimick, who was inserted into the lineup in the fifth inning, went 2-for-3 as well.

Saint Leo will now head to Pensacola, Fla. as they get ready for an NCAA South Region series with the University of West Florida.  The Lions depart on Monday morning for a three-game set with the Argonauts that will begin that evening at 7:00 p.m.  The first and second games of the series will be carried live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
