FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team (0-3) fell at the hands of the Nova Southeastern Sharks (3-0) in a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

After surrendering 18 runs in the first game, the Lions tried to slow the mighty Sharks’ offense in game two but were unsuccessful, dropping a 5-2 decision allowing Nova to complete the sweep over Coach McNickle’s squad.

Leading the way for the Lions on the offensive side was Jason Hamm, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored. Bobby Munoz and Kyle Hobbs picked up two hits a piece in eight attempts, while Munoz picked up an RBI.

In the first game, SLU immediately found themselves in a hole, as Nova Southeastern scored 11 runs during the first four innings of play.

Saint Leo struck back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning on three singles. The trio of Jonathan Duncan, Jason Hamm and Eugene Garnett collected half of the Lions hits for the game were responsible for collecting both RBI. The runs couldn’t be carried over into the following innings nor could the pitching cool the Sharks’ sticks, as NSU responded with seven runs over the next two innings to solidify the victory.

Lions’ starter Matt Smith lasted 2.2 innings, surrendering seven runs while walking three. Three other relievers combine to let up ten hits and 11 runs over the following 5.1 innings. NSU’s offense scored three or more runs in four times during the first outing.

The second game was much closer for the Green & Gold, as they were they first to draw blood in the seven inning second game, as Munoz drove in Dustin Brown on an RBI single. Nova Southeastern answered the Lions first run with a run of their own then coupled that with two runs in the fourth.

Nova Southeastern added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings

The loss spoiled the first home run of the year by Aaron Mclamar and a solid effort by Seth Fowler on the mound. Fowler went four innings, giving up three runs on seven hits.

The Lions resume non-conference action when they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to take on the Moccasins of Florida Southern on Tuesday, February 10. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
