St. Augustine, Fla. (April 26, 2008) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (27-21) split a non-conference doubleheader with Flagler College (24-21) on Saturday afternoon at Flagler Stadium in St. Augustine, Fla.  The Lions were edged 2-1 in game one before earning the split with a 16-3 win in the nightcap.

The start of the doubleheader was delayed over an hour due to a bus problem on the way to St. Augustine for the Lions.

Yunior Tabares (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) went a combined 5-for-8 on the day with six RBI including a grand slam in game two.  Kyle Hobbs (Jr., Dade City, Fla.) also had five hits on the day, going a perfect 5-for-5 in the second half of the twinbill.

Despite a complete-game effort by starter Ryan Clark (Sr., Tampa, Fla.), the Lions came up on the short end in a low-scoring game one.  Clark went the distance, allowing two runs on just six hits while striking out seven.

Saint Leo took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double from Tabares.  Bobby Munoz (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) reached with a single to left center before Tabares drove him in with the first of two doubles in the opening contest.

The teams stayed off the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth when a series of wild events gave Flagler the lead for the first time.  Clark got a lineout by the leadoff batter, and had struck out the second batter of the inning.  However, the batter reached on a wild pitch.  Following a single, Clark was able to pick off the runner at second for the second out of the inning.

A single then allowed the tying run to score, and following an interference call at third the Saints scored what proved to be the game-winning run.

In game two, Saint Leo scored runs in all but one inning as they put together a four-run first inning to take early control.  The highlight of the contest was a grand slam from Tabares that keyed a five-run third inning.  The Lions pounded out 18 hits in the nightcap en route to the win.

The teams will meet again on Sunday in a single game at 1:00 p.m.
