Valdosta, Ga. (April 23, 2008) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (26-20) was downed 8-1 on the road by No. 15 Valdosta State University (32-15-1) on Wednesday night at Billy Grant Field in Valdosta, Ga.

Saint Leo seniors Yunior Tabares (Tampa, Fla.) and Brandin Daniel (Punta Gorda, Fla.) both went 2-for-4 in the contest, while catcher Jason Hamm (So., Tampa, Fla.) drove in the lone run for the Lions as part of a 1-for-4 performance.

Valdosta State took charge of the game with three runs in the third and a five-run fourth inning to open up an 8-0 lead.  The Lions got on the board in the fifth, as Daniel led off the inning with a single.  Hamm drove Daniel in with a two-out RBI single to provide the only scoring of the night for Saint Leo.

VSU reliever Will Thompson was credited with the win, as the Blazer bullpen allowed just four hits in 5.0 shutout innings.  Saint Leo starter Dale Slimick (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) was the losing pitcher for the night, as he allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in 3.0 innings of work.

Valdosta State avenged a 4-0 loss to Saint Leo just weeks ago at Southard Stadium.  The loss was the fourth straight for Saint Leo after the Lions were swept by No. 5 Tampa in an SSC series this past weekend.

The Lions will head to St. Augustine, Fla. this weekend for a three-game non-conference series at Flagler College.  The teams will play a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday with a single game slated for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
