Saint Leo, Fla. (April 19, 2008) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (26-19, 7-12 SSC) was swept in a doubleheader by No. 5 Tampa (34-7-1, 13-5 SSC) on Saturday at Southard Stadium. UT won game one 16-11 before wrapping up a sweep of the three-game series with a 9-8 10-inning victory in the nightcap.
Jonathan Duncan (Jr., Starke, Fla.) led the Lions on the afternoon, going a combined 5-for-10 with three RBI, two doubles and two runs scored. Brandin Daniel (Sr., Punta Gorda, Fla.) also went 4-for-6 on the day with a home run and an RBI.
A wild game one saw the Spartans clinch the series win with a 16-11 victory. Saint Leo got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the third, but Tampa took a 4-3 lead with four runs in the third. The Lions tied it at four with a run in the bottom of the third, but again Tampa regained the lead with a run in the fifth.
Saint Leo got a leadoff home run from Daniel in the fifth and took the lead with another run in the inning. However, Tampa seized control with a three-run sixth and back-to-back four-run innings in the seventh and eighth to open a 16-6 lead. Saint Leo scored the final five runs of the game, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
In game two, the Spartans jumped on the scoreboard first with three runs in the first inning. A leadoff walk was followed by a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to give the Spartans the early lead. Tampa then opened a five-run lead with a two-run homer by Steven Broschofsky in the sixth.
The Lions began their comeback in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs to take a 6-5 lead. Back-to-back two-run doubles by Duncan and Anthony Santa (Fr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) tied the game, and Braulio Pardo (Jr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to give the Lions the lead.
Tampa forced extra innings with an RBI single by Leo Alvarez in the top of the seventh. The Spartans then took the lead with a home run by Jesus Barroso in the top of the ninth. Saint Leo tied the score in the bottom of the ninth when Duncan drove in pinch runner Eddie San Roman (So., Miami, Fla.) from second base.
The Spartans eventually went on top for good in the 10th with a sacrifice fly and then an RBI single from Barroso added an insurance run. The Lions closed to within one in the bottom of the 10th on a solo home run by Bobby Munoz (Jr., Tampa, Fla.).
Saint Leo will take a break from conference action this week, as the Lions will head to Valdosta, Ga. on Wednesday to face Valdosta State University at 5:00 p.m. The Lions will then travel to St. Augustine, Fla. next weekend for a three-game series at Flagler College.
