Saint Leo, Fla. (April 12, 2008) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (25-16, 7-9 SSC) swept Barry University (28-12, 9-6 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Southard Stadium. The Lions rallied to win game one 11-7 before hitting three grand slams en route to a 20-9 win in the seven-inning second game.
Saint Leo's total of three grand slams in the second game of the doubleheader established a new NCAA Division II record. The previous record of two grand slams in a game had been set 20 times with the most recent by Delta State versus Union (Ky.) on April 11, 2001.
In total, Saint Leo hit nine home runs in the doubleheader, as they were led by 2B Jonathan Duncan (Jr., Starke, Fla.) who went a combined 5-for-8 with eight RBI and a pair of home runs. Freshman 3B Anthony Santa (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) was also 4-for-7 with six RBI and a pair of homers on the afternoon. T.J. Alonzo (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) and Kyle Hobbs (Jr., Dade City, Fla.) joined Santa with 4-for-7 performances at the plate, while Alonzo blasted his team-leading 17th homer of the season in game one.
Saint Leo jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one, as the Lions plated a pair of runs in the first inning. A sacrifice fly from Yunior Tabares (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) was followed by an RBI single from Duncan to give SLU the 2-0 lead. Barry quickly answered back in the second inning with five runs to open up a 5-2 lead. The Bucs stretched the lead to 7-2 in the fifth. An RBI single by Alonzo in the bottom of the fifth made it 7-3 Barry.
The Lions put together a two out rally in the seventh inning to roar back and take the lead for good. Hobbs started the rally with a solo home run. Bobby Munoz (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) followed with a double before Alonzo blasted his 17th homer of the season to bring the Lions within one run at 7-6. Tabares then doubled before back-to-back home runs from Duncan and then a solo shot by Hamm gave the Lions an 9-7 lead.
Saint Leo iced the win with a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning, as Munoz delivered a two-run single. Lions’ reliever Shane Buriff (Sr., Lutz, Fla.) picked up the game one win, as he improved to 3-0 on the season. Buriff allowed just one hit in three innings of shutout ball to get the win. Barry’s Aaron Main was the loser, as he gave up four runs and was unable to retire any Lion batters in the seventh inning.
In game two the Lions got on the scoreboard early and often with seven runs in both the first and third innings, and a two-run second inning sandwiched in between. DH Zac Caito (So., Warrenton, Va.) hit a grand slam to key the seven-run first, and Duncan cleared the bases with a grand slam in the third.
The Lions also added four more runs in the fourth when Santa delivered his first career grand slam. It was the second home run of the game for Santa who also hit a two-run shot in the second inning.
Matthew Smith (Fr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) improved to 4-1 with the game two win, while Barry’s Bobby Riley (1-1) was on the losing side in the second half of the twin bill.
Saint Leo will travel to Winter Park, Fla. on Tuesday night to face Rollins College in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m.
