Saint Leo, Fla. (April 11, 2008) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (23-16, 5-9 SSC) fell 3-1 to visiting Barry University (28-10, 9-4 SSC) in the opening game of a Sunshine State Conference series Friday night at Southard Stadium.

Barry starter Bobby Hernandez tossed 8.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out 10 to improve to 5-0 on the season.  Bucs’ closer Brian Milanes recorded his sixth save despite giving up a leadoff single to T.J. Alonzo (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) in the ninth.

Saint Leo starter Ryan Clark (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) was saddled with the loss (2-6) despite a solid outing that saw him go 7.2 innings and allow two runs on five hits while recording six K’s.

The Bucs took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first, as Nick Shaw led off the game with a solo home run.  Saint Leo quickly answered to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning when Yunior Tabares (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) delivered a sacrifice fly to score Kyle Hobbs (Jr., Dade City, Fla.).

Barry scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth inning with another solo home run.  Mitch Rodriguez drove a blast over the centerfield fence to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead.  Barry added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to secure the win.

Saint Leo and Barry will conclude their SSC series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Southard Stadium.
