Lakeland, Fla. (April 5, 2008) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (22-15, 5-8 SSC) was swept by Florida Southern College (18-19, 7-7 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla. on Saturday afternoon.  Southern used a five-run eighth inning to win game one 6-4 and a three-run sixth to take game two 5-2.

Devon Cason (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) led the Lions on the afternoon, going a combined 3-for-7 with an RBI, while catcher Jason Hamm (So., Tampa, Fla.) was the only Lions to drive in multiple runs on the day with a 1-for-2 performance and two RBI in the second game of the twin bill.

In game one, the Lions took the lead with two runs in the top of the second inning. Cason singled through the left side to score Braulio Pardo (Jr., Tampa, Fla.).  Bobby Munoz (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) then drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0 Saint Leo.

The Mocs cut the lead in half by pushing one run across the plate in the bottom of the fifth, but Saint Leo regained its two-run advantage when T.J. Alonzo (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) hit a solo home run to left in the seventh.

Florida Southern rallied in the eighth, as the Mocs scored five runs in the frame.  A grand slam by first baseman Brian Schultz was followed by a solo homer by the very next batter, Will Cherry.  The Lions scored one run in the top of the ninth to make it 6-4 but could rally no further.

Game two followed the same pattern, though it was Southern who opened the scoring with a run in the second.  Saint Leo took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Hamm delivered a two-run single, but Southern tied the game at two in the bottom half of the inning.

The Mocs then batted around the order and scored three runs on four hits in the sixth to secure the win and complete the doubleheader sweep.

The same two teams will meet again on Sunday in the make-up of Friday’s rained out contest.  The final game of the SSC weekend series is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Henley Field.
