Saint Leo, Fla. (March 17, 2008) – Saint Leo University baseball player Yunior Tabares (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) was named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week it was announced Monday by SSC Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.

Tabares led the Lions (21-8, 4-2 SSC) to a 4-1 record for the week, including a Sunshine State Conference series win over Eckerd, as he batted .444 (8-for-18) with 13 RBI, four home runs, a double and six runs scored.  The senior had three multiple-hit games for the week and three multiple-RBI performances (including two five-RBI games).  He slugged 1.167 and had an on-base percentage of .500, while being perfect in the field defensively.

In a 2-0 win over Bentley, Tabares hit the second of back-to-back homers to power the Lions to a win and the next night he went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI in a 10-5 win over Wayne State.  Tabares capped off his week with a 2-for-5 performance in the series clinching win over Eckerd on Sunday.  In that win, he had five RBI, a home run, double and three runs scored.

Saint Leo student-athletes have now claimed a total of 23 SSC Player of the Week honors in the 2007-08 season, and 25 Athletes of the Week overall.  Tabares won the honor for the second time this season and became the fourth Saint Leo baseball player honored in the last five weeks.
The Saint Leo baseball team returns to action this Friday with the opening game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series versus Rollins College at Southard Stadium.  Opening pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
