Saint Leo, Fla. (March 11, 2008) – T.J. Alonzo (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) and Yunior Tabares (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to provide all the offense needed for the No. 29 Saint Leo University baseball team (18-7) to defeat visiting Bentley College (2-1) by a score of 2-0 on Tuesday evening at Southard Stadium.  The win was the eighth in the last nine outings for the Lions.

Neither team could muster any offense in the early part of the contest, as Saint Leo starter Santi Arencibia (So., Key West, Fla.) and Bentley starter Brett Fistes battled it out in a pitcher’s duel.

Alonzo and Tabares broke the deadlock in the seventh when Alonzo led off the inning with his team-leading 13th home run of the season.  Following a pitching change, Tabares took the first delivery of the evening from reliever Joe Herzog over the right field fence to provide the final margin.

Arencibia scattered five hits in 6.0 innings of work to pick up his first win of the season (1-0), while striking out four.  Eric Nickolaison (Jr., Spring Hill, Fla.) allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings of relief for the Lions, and closer Matt Smith (Sr., Dade City, Fla.) retired the side in order in the ninth to preserve the win and pick up his third save of the season.

Fistes was the hard luck loser for the Falcons, as he went 6.0 innings and allowed only one run on three hits.

Saint Leo will host Wayne State University tomorrow in another non-conference game at 7:00 p.m.
