Tampa, Fla. (April 28, 2007) – The Saint Leo baseball team (26-25, 10-14 SSC) was swept by No. 3 ranked University of Tampa Spartans (39-9, 17-4 SSC) on Saturday afternoon in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at UT Baseball Field.  UT won game one 13-4 before finishing the three-game sweep with a 9-4 win in the seven inning second contest.

Saint Leo was led by senior 1B Eric Spicer (Jacksonville, Fla.) who went a combined 4-for-7 with four RBI, including his team-leading 11th home run of the year.  Six other Lions players had a combined two hits on the afternoon.

Tampa scored runs in all but one inning in game one after the Lions had taken the lead with a run in the first.  A three-run bottom of the first was highlighted by a pair of home runs for the Spartans who took the lead for good in the inning.

Both Spicer and Ricky Nolan (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) were 2-for-4 in game one with a pair of RBI, but the UT home run assault was too much as for the second consecutive game Roberto Mena homered twice and the Spartans totaled five home runs in the contest.

In game two, the Lions again jumped out to an early lead when Spicer connected on a two-run homer in the top of the first.  UT cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, but the Lions stretched their lead to 4-1 with runs in the third and fourth innings before UT tied the score with a three-run bottom of the fourth.

The Spartans then took the lead and the series sweep by putting together a five-run fifth inning to open up the 9-4 lead, which proved to be the final margin.

Saint Leo is tentatively scheduled to play a re-scheduled doubleheader at Florida Tech on Thursday, May 10 in Melbourne, Fla. but full schedule details have yet to be finalized.  Stay tuned to SaintLeoLions.com for the latest schedule information.
