Saint Leo, Fla. (April 7, 2007) – Saint Leo designated hitter Charlie Blume went a combined 6-for-8 with two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored to lead the Lions baseball team (23-17, 8-7 SSC) to a doubleheader sweep of No. 21 Lynn University (24-16, 9-6 SSC) on Saturday afternoon at Southard Stadium.

The Lions won game one 16-9 before wrapping up a sweep of the three-game weekend series with a 6-2 victory in game two.  The wins pushed the Lions conference record to over .500 for the first time this season.

In addition to Blume’s success at the plate, LF Sean VanGuilder (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) went 2-for-5 with a homer and five RBI in the opening contest.  Matt Prowant (Sr., Dade City, Fla.) was also 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in game one.

In a wild first game, the Lions fell behind in the first when Nicolas Boisvert led off with a solo home run for the second consecutive game in the series.  Joe Arminio then added a solo homer of his own to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Lions quickly responded in the second inning, scoring five runs on the strength of Prowant;s two-run homer and a three-run shot by VanGuilder.  Saint Leo added a run in the third before Lynn made it a two-run game with a pair of runs in the fifth on Boisvert’s second long ball of the game and fourth of the series.

However, the Lions cemented the win with a 10-run bottom of the fifth.  VanGuilder had a two-run single, Ricky Nolan (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) had an RBI double, while Blume was 2-for-2 in the inning, including a three-run home run.  Kyle Hobbs (So., Dade City, Fla.) also collected an RBI single in the fifth, while a pair of runs scored on bases loaded walks.

Lynn scored the final five runs of the game, but could rally no further as the Lions secured the series victory with back-to-back wins.  Shane Buriff (Jr., Lutz, Fla.) was the game one winner, improving to 3-2.  Lynn starter Lonnie Patterson was the losing pitcher, falling to 5-3 on the year.

In game two, Lynn again took the lead with a run in the second inning.  But once again, the Lions rallied and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning.  SLU stretched the lead to 3-1 in the third on an RBI single by Prowant.

Two more runs in the fifth were highlighted by Blume’s lead off home run, and Saint Leo led 6-1 with another run in the sixth.  Lynn plated a run late but left the bases loaded twice in the seven-inning affair.

Carter Clements (Jr., Eustis, Fla.) was the winning pitcher in game two, tossing his second consecutive complete-game seven inning win and improving to 3-5 on the year.  Lynn’s Chris Snow fell to 5-2 with the loss for the Fighting Knights.

Saint Leo will host the University of Tampa on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference game at Southard Stadium.
