Saint Leo, Fla. (April 6, 2007) – Ricky Nolan (Jr., Seminole, Fla. hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Saint Leo University baseball team (21-17, 6-7 SSC) a 7-6 win over No. 21 Lynn University (24-14, 9-4 SSC) on Friday night in a Sunshine State Conference series opener.
Nolan completed a 2-for-4 performance and collected a pair of RBI, while Eric Spicer (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) totaled three RBI on the night.
Lynn took an early lead, as Nicolas Boisvert led off the game with a solo home run. However, the Lions responded in the third when a sacrifice fly by Spicer scored a pair of runs to give Saint Leo a 2-1 lead.
The Lions stretched the lead with a run in the fifth, as Spicer again picked up an RBI with a ground out. After Lynn tied the score at three apiece with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, Devon Cason (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) delivered a sacrifice fly to score a run in the bottom of the inning to give the Lions a 4-3 lead.
SLU built a three-run lead with two runs in the seventh, but Lynn clawed its way back with a run in the eighth and tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.
Jerry Gonzalez (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) led off the ninth with a double and later scored the winning run when Nolan lined his game-winning single through the left side of the infield.
Charlie Blume (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) got the win for the Lions, improving to 2-3 on the year, while Lynn reliever Craig Sheets was credited with the loss (2-2).
The same two teams will battle again tomorrow in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader rat Southard Stadium.
