Winter Park, Fla. (March 30, 2007) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (19-15, 4-6 SSC) knocked off Rollins College (20-14, 5-5 SSC) by a score of 15-5 on Friday night in the opening game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series in Winter Park, Fla.
The Saint Leo lineup was consistent from top-to-bottom, as every batter recorded at least one hit. The Lions had three separate players homer, including Eric Spicer (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) who went 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored in the contest. Senior SS Jerry Gonzalez (Tampa, Fla.) also homered, as part of a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Yunior Tabares (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) rounded out the trio of long-ball hitters with a solo shot of his own.
Ryan Clark (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) went the distance for Saint Leo, allowing five runs, three earned, while striking out 10 in nine innings. Clark improved to 7-2 with the win.
Saint Leo opened the scoring in the second and then put together back-to-back three-run innings in the third and fourth innings to build a 7-0 advantage. Both Spicer and Tabares homered to provide the three runs in the fourth.
Rollins rallied to make it 8-4 but the Lions put together a seven-run seventh inning and seize control of the contest.
Saint Leo and Rollins will round out their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Winter Park.
