Ft. Myers, Fla. (March 27, 2007) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (18-15) fell 12-6 on the road at 18th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University’s (22-9) Swanson Stadium on Tuesday.

Saint Leo’s Sean VanGuilder (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while both Devon Cason (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) and Yunior Tabares (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) connected on  solo home runs in the contest.

The Lions took an early lead with a run in the top of the second inning, but the Eagles battled back to tie the score with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  FGCU then took the lead with a run in the fourth and opened a 3-1 advantage with another run in the fifth.

The teams exchanged runs in the sixth.  After Saint Leo had closed to within a run when Tabares led off with his homer in the seventh, Gulf Coast put together an eight-run bottom of the seventh to take command.

The first nine Eagle batters reached base in the seventh inning, as a total of 11 players stepped to the plate during the eight-run outburst.  The Lions scored a pair of runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth but could rally no further.

Saint Leo will return to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend with a three-game road series at Rollins College.  The teams will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and will then play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
