Saint Leo, Fla. (March 10, 2007) – The Saint Leo baseball team (14-8, 1-2 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with visiting No. 21 Nova Southeastern University (18-4, 2-1 SSC) on Saturday afternoon at Southard Stadium. The Lions took game one 12-7 to even the three-game series at one win apiece, but the Sharks rallied to win the seven-inning game two 5-2 and claim the series victory.
Saint Leo designated hitter Yunior Tabares (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) went a combined 6-for-7 on the afternoon with two RBI and five runs scored. He was 4-for-4 in the opening contest with three doubles. The Lions’ junior catcher Ricky Nolan (Seminole, Fla.) was also hot at the plate, going a combined 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and three runs.
Matt Prowant (Sr., Dade City Fla.) went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the opening contest, and started the scoring for the Lions when he delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. The Lions added to their lead with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to open a 6-0 lead.
After NSU had cut the gap to just two with back-to-back two-run innings in the sixth and seventh, the Lions put answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. They then put together a four-run eighth to open a 12-4 lead. NSU scored three runs in the ninth but could rally no closer.
Shane Buriff (Jr., Lutz, Fla.) picked up the game one win for the Lions, improving to 2-1 on the season. He allowed two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work.
In the second game, NSU scored a run in the first to take the early lead. Jerry Gonzalez (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) then put the Lions on top 2-1 with a two-run home run in the third. The Sharks put together a four-run fourth to provide all the scoring they would need en route to the 5-2 win.
Saint Leo will remain at home this week, as the Lions will face Shippensburg University on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
