Saint Leo, Fla. (March 4, 2007) – The Saint Leo baseball team (10-6) swept a doubleheader with St. Anselm College (0-2) on Sunday afternoon at Southard Stadium. The Lions won game one 24-0 and battled for a hard fought 6-5 win in game two.
Saint Leo was led by senior SS Jerry Gonzalez (Tampa, Fla.) who was a combined 7-for-11 on the afternoon and had four RBI, two triples, a double and three runs scored. Junior Yunior Tabares (Tampa, Fla.) was a combined 3-for-5 with four RBI and four runs on the day.
In game one, the Lions scored a season-high 24 runs, as all but one player in the starting lineup registered at least one hit. Tabares was a perfect 3-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI and four runs scored. Gonzalez was 5-for-7 with three RBI and a pair of runs, as he was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Lionel Ferguson (So., Nassau, Bahamas) and Kyle Hobbs (So., Dade City, Fla.) also had three RBI in the game.
Ryan Clark (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) allowed just two hits in 6.2 scoreless innings on the mound, improving to 4-1 on the season. Relievers David Partyka (Fr., Detroit, Mich.) and Bernie Gaydos (Fr., Tampa., Fla.) completed the shutout by allowing just one hit in the final 2.1 innings.
In game two, the Lions scored runs in each of the final four innings to wrap up the sweep and reach 10 wins on the season. The game-winning run was scored in the bottom of the sixth, as the Lions rallied from a one-run deficit twice in the contest. Gonzalez delivered an RBI triple to score Jorge Burgos (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) with two outs.
The same two teams will meet again tomorrow at Southard Stadium in a single game. Opening pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
