Saint Leo, Fla. (February 24, 2007) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (7-5) was swept by visiting St. Thomas University (8-6) in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Southard Stadium.  The Bobcats won game one 8-4 before taking the deciding game of the three-game series 5-2 in the nightcap.

Saint Leo struggled to get its offense going in both games, as St. Thomas pitchers limited the Lions to nine total hits for the day.  SLU’s Ricky Nolan (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) went a combined 2-for-6 on the day with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Jerry Gonzalez (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) was also 2-for-6 with a run.

St. Thomas took firm control of game one with three runs in the fourth.  The Lions pulled with within two runs with a single run in the fourth, but the Bobcats scored one run in the fifth and sixth innings and added another three runs in the ninth to seal the win.  The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth but could rally no further.

In the second half of the twinbill, STU again opened the scoring with a run in the first.  The Lions tied the game in the third with a sacrifice fly by Eric Spicer (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.).

St. Thomas regained the lead with one run in the fifth and then added a pair of runs, including the eventual game-winner, in the sixth.  Another sacrifice fly scored the Lions’ second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bobcats added an insurance run in the seventh to wrap up the doubleheader sweep.

The Lions will host the University of Concordia-St. Paul on Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in their next contest.
