Saint Leo, Fla. (February 17, 2007) – The Saint Leo baseball team (5-3) climbed to two games over .500 with a doubleheader sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic University (2-8) by the scores of 16-6 and 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
In game one, the Lions scored a season-high 16 runs after falling behind 5-0. The offense was paced by senior Eric Spicer (Jacksonville, Fla.) who was 3-for-4 with 6 RBI in the game including a three-run blast.
Senior Jerry Gonzalez (Tampa, Fla.) and senior Sean VanGuilder (Tallahassee, Fla.) added three hits as well to set the table for the Lions offense. Sophomore Eric Nickolaison (Spring Hill, Fla.) allowed two hits over 4.1 innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season (1-0).
In game two, junior Carter Clements (Eustis, Fla.) tossed six innings of two-hit ball to slow down the Sailfish bats and deliver the series sweep. Senior Matt Smith (Dade City, Fla.) added a scoreless inning in relief.
Freshman Zac Caito (Warrenton, Va.) led the offense with a three-run home run in the third inning. Gonzalez and senior Matt Prowant (Dade City, Fla.) had two hits apiece in game two.
The Lions next host Eckerd College Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
