Saint Leo, Fla. (February 6, 2007) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (1-0) opened its 2007 season with a 8-3 victory over visiting Eckerd College (0-2) in a non-conference game at Southard Stadium on Tuesday night.

Saint Leo 1B Eric Spicer (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Sean VanGuilder (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) was also able to bring home a pair of runs, as he went 1-for-3.  SS Jerry Gonzalez (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) and C Ricky Nolan (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) were also 2-for-4 in the game.

The Lions scored all of their runs in the first two innings, as they opened with a run in the first and then erupted for seven runs in the second inning.  VanGuilder delivered a two-run single in the inning, while Spicer, Charlie Blume (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Yunior Tabares (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) all knocked in runs with RBI singles.

Saint Leo starting left-hander Ryan Clark (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) was credited with the win (1-0), as he struck out five of the eight batters he faced.  Eckerd’s Josh Stroup was saddled with the loss (0-1).

The Lions return to the diamond on Saturday when they host Barry University in a doubleheader.  First pitch for the opening game of the double dip is slated for 4:00 p.m.
