Chad Berryhill of the Saint Leo women's tennis team were named Freshman and Coach of the Year, respectively, by the Sunshine State Conference on Friday, while
Kristyna Jurkova joined Vicens Miquel as a 2018 All-SSC first-team member.
Marta Vicens Miquel registered a 14-7 regular season no. 1 singles record for the Lions. She becomes the second Saint Leo student-athlete to claim Freshman of the Year honors in women's tennis. She will enter the NCAA South Regionals with a 15-8 first singles mark, currently ranked No. 46 by the ITA Division II rankings. Her Freshman of the Year award is paired with being selected as All-SSC first-team.
Saint Leo second year head coach
Chad Berryhill was named the 2018 SSC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year leading the Lions to a 16-5 regular season record, finishing third in the conference, fourth-seed entering the NCAA South Region postseason. Under Berryhill's direction, Saint Leo improved from a No. 34 ITA Division II team ranking to No. 9 this season. Saint Leo currently holds an 18-6 season record raising Berryhill's women's tennis coaching record at Saint Leo to 28-12. Off the court, he has lead the Lions in participating in events such as the "Love One Another" program of Dade City, Habitat for Humanity and teaching Physical Education classes at the local elementary school. On the campus of Saint Leo, Berryhill established an on-campus "tennis group", "Meet the Lions" Tennis Clinic for Saint Leo Faculty and a Lions Tennis Supporters group.
Kristyna Jurkova moved up from her 2017 All-SSC second-team selection to a 2018 All-SSC first-team member. Jurkova has compiled a 20-3 second singles record.
Up next for the Lions is the 2018 NCAA South Regionals which will be hosted by No. 1 seed Barry. Saint Leo will face the No. 5 seed Florida Southern on Wednesday, April 28.
