SAINT LEO, Fla. – Junior
Thomas Grinberg of the Saint Leo men's tennis team was named the Sunshine State Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week today (April 2), for competition held March 26 through April 1, the conference office announced. This marks the second weekly honor of Grinberg's career and the fourth honor for the Saint Leo men's tennis program this season.
Grinberg, who is the No. 1 ranked player in the country according to the most recent Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Collegiate Tennis Rankings, remained perfect on the season with a trio of singles victories while playing No. 1 for the Lions. The Vincennes, France native also went 3-0 in doubles action while teaming up with classmate
Vincent Suillerot. The duo is ranked No. 9 in the nation according to the most recent national doubles rankings. Grinberg's three singles victories pushed his seasonal record to 15-0 while he and Suillerot improved to 11-3 in doubles action.
Grinberg began the week with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Aria Canadell Solana of Florida Tech to help push the Lions conference record to a perfect 3-0. He and Suillerot survived a scare in doubles action but pulled out a 9-8 (6) win over the Panthers.
Up next for Grinberg was a top-10 match-up with Vicente Lagos of Keiser. Grinberg downed the 10
th-ranked NAIA player Lagos 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in a hard-fought three-set affair. He also picked up a 9-7 victory in doubles with Suillerot once again to help the Lions edge The third ranked team in NAIA, Keiser, 5-4.
The final match of the week was another top-10 showdown as the Lions faced No. 5 Lynn. Grinberg cruised past No. 5 Jean-Baptiste Mateo 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while he and Suillerot topped the No. 1 duo from Lynn 8-6.
The Saint Leo men's tennis team will return to action this Wednesday, April 4 as they host No. 40 Rollins in SSC action at 3 pm at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
