MELBOURNE, Fla. – A total of 50 Saint Leo student-athletes were named to the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2017 fall semester, announced on Wednesday by SSC Commissioner Ed Pasque.
The Lions saw five individuals earn a perfect 4.00 in the fall, as Payton Ruehling, Vanessa Sefriou, and Natalie Melillo of women's soccer, Joshua Sickinger of men's cross country, and Colett Rampf of women's cross country all finished with the elusive honor (names in bold).
Women's soccer led with 15 honored, and men's soccer followed with 14. The volleyball team saw 11 honored, while women's cross country team had seven and the men's cross country team added three.
The SSC as a whole saw a total of 651 student-athletes honored on the list, with a total of 142 earning 4.0's. The total breaks the previous record number of 532 student-athletes that were named to the 2016 Fall Commissioner's
Honor Roll. It is the fifth consecutive record-breaking fall for the SSC Honor Roll.
"Sunshine State Conference student-athletes are among the best in the country athletically, academically, and in their communities," stated Commissioner Pasque. " Today's announcement of 651 student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll is further evidence of this fact."
To be eligible for the Fall SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll, a student-athlete must post a minimum grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Participants in the sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball were eligible for the fall honor roll.
Having won 102 Division II National Championships since the league was founded in 1975, SSC's student-athletes have proven to be successful in the classroom as well. The SSC boasts an Academic Success Rate of 86 percent for the seventh consecutive year. The mark ranks first among all 24 Division II conferences.
