SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 21 Saint Leo volleyball remains undefeated and opens Sunshine State Conference play with a win after a 3-1 (25-15, 25-13, 20-25, 25-20) win over Rollins Friday night.
The Lions are 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in the SSC. On the night, Saint Leo was led by
Anna Garrett who tallied her first double-double of the season with 47 assists 10 digs.
Offensively,
Victoria Omoregie notched her season-high in kills with 18 where
Ashley Quero opened her home debut with 17 kills. Omoreige finished the night with a .467 clip where Quero stood at .312.
Jenya Kruglova and
Britt Sederholm led the Lions defensively with 16 and 14 digs, respectively.
Saint Leo put down double-digit kills in all four sets while three of the four, they finished with a hitting percentage higher than .289. The Lions put away 59 total kills on 137 attempts to finish with a .263 clip.
Saint Leo 25-15 | The Lions jumped out to a quick start in the first set and took a commanding 11-5 lead before a Rollins timeout. The Tars closed to within three, 16-13, forcing a Lion timeout. Out of the time, Saint Leo went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 20-13. Rollins was forced to call another timeout at 21-14, before the Lions saw
Ashley Quero finish off the Tars with back-to-back kills to end the set.
Saint Leo 25-13 | Rollins opened the second set scoring the first three points before the Lions got on the board on a Quero kills, 3-1. After the Lions tied it 4-4, the Green and Gold charged out to a 17-10 lead, as the Tars called a timeout. The Lions served seven of the final 11 points where
Dallas Jasper,
Victoria Omoregie, Quero, and
Nina Vattovaz all put down a kill.
Anna Garrett added a service ace in the mix to help the Lions take the second set by 12.
Rollins 25-20 | A slow start after the intermission saw the Lions fall behind 11-6 before a timeout. Scoring back-to-back points out of the timeout, Saint Leo would eventually climb to within three, 14-11, before a Rollins timeout. The Lions would tally six kills over the next 14 points to help themselves climb to within one, 20-19, before the Tars took the third set on a 5-1 run.
Saint Leo 25-20 | After dropping just their second set of the season, the Lions battled the Tars close in the fourth set. With no timeouts used in the first 32 points, Saint Leo would find its way out to a 19-13 lead before the Tars took a timeout. Charging out to a 22-15 lead, Rollins unloaded their second and final timeout to attempt to kill momentum. The Tars scored five points to the Lions two to close the gap to 24-20 before head coach
Sam Cibrone called timeout.
Anna Garrett would pick up her 47th assists on a kill by
Britt Sederholm for set and match point.
Saint Leo will remain at home as they host No. 4 Palm Beach Atlantic tomorrow at 4 p.m. inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
