SAINT LEO, Fla. – After wrapping up the fall season with a fifth place finish at the Copperhead Championship on Oct. 17, the Saint Leo men's golf team moved up two spots in the final Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll, coming in at No. 9.
The Lions played in four tournaments in the fall, placing in the top five two times with their best finish of third at the Cougar Invitational. Saint Leo added a fifth place, seventh place and 10th place to their fall resume.
As a team, the Lions averaged a 290.17 scoring average led by
Alberto Castagnara. Castagnara played in 12 rounds and shot a 71.17 average with his best round of 66 during the second round of the Copperhead Championship. Castagnara finished in the top 10 three times, with two top five and one first place finish, which he fell short in the playoff competition.
Saint Leo turned in a best performance at the Cougar Invitational, placing third out of 18 teams with a four-under 848. Propelling the Lions to their four-under round was a six-under third round at the Cougar Invitational, marking their best fall round.
Representing the Sunshine State Conference in the poll were Florida Southern (No. 2), Lynn (No. 3), Nova Southeastern (No. 4), Florida Tech (T5), Saint Leo (No. 9), Barry (No. 12), and Rollins (No. 18). The first spring Bushnell Golfweek DII Coaches Poll will be released on February 16.
The Lions return to the course on Feb. 12-13 when they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to participate in the annual Matlock Invitational at the Lone Palm Golf Course.
