Saint Leo University head women's basketball coach Nikki Jessee announced the hire of Andrell Smith as an assistant coach just before the 2013-14 season. Smith joined the Lions after graduating from the University of South Florida in May of 2012, where she played as a point guard for two seasons.
"Andrell has an impressive basketball pedigree," said Jessee. "She's won big at every level she's ever played at, and we're excited to have her bring that winning mentality to our program. With her vast playing experience, we expect her to make a positive impact on our players immediately."
Smith joined a Lions' basketball program that saw much success during the previous two years under Jessee's tutelage. During the 2012-13 season alone, the Lions made their first trip to the Sunshine State Conference Championship game.
Though new to the coaching sphere, Smith is very familiar with the game of basketball. During her two seasons with the USF Bulls, Smith was named Defensive MVP and selected to the All Big-East Second Team in 2013. In addition, her leadership skills earned her a spot as a team captain during her senior season.
Prior to her experience at USF, Smith was a member of the Gulf Coast Community College Team in Panama City, Fla. In two seasons with the junior college Smith's team won back-to-back conference championships and won the 2010 Junior College National Championship. In 2010, Smith was also named to the Junior College National All-Tournament Team.
The Lakeland, Fla. native also spent time as a basketball trainer and camp counselor for numerous organizations in the Tampa Bay area.
Smith earned her bachelors degree in Arts and Sciences from the University of South Florida in May of 2012.
