Saint Leo women’s golf at Barry Women’s Invitational

  • Saint Leo women’s golf competes in its last pre-championship season event this week when it travels to Miami for the Barry Women’s Invitational. After the Barry tournament, the Lions begin their post-season journey at the Regional Preview event in Pensacola, followed by the Sunshine State Conference Championship in Key Biscayne.
  • The 54-hole tournament begins with rounds one and two on Monday in an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. Tuesday’s third round also begins at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. Nine teams among the GolfStat top 20 will participate, including No. 1 Florida Tech, No. 2 Rollins, No. 3 Barry, No. 6 Nova Southeastern, No. 7 Lynn, No. 10 Indianapolis, and No. 18 Grand Valley State, in addition to the No. 5-ranked Saint Leo Lions. Rollins enters as the defending champions, while Nova Southeastern won the 2014 event.
  • The Lions’ starting five for the Lady Eagle Invitational will be junior Marie Coors, sophomore Amanda Jakobsson, sophomore Vilde Eriksen, senior Kellianne May, and junior Sabrina Rumbaugh.

  • The Saint Leo tennis teams host West Florida on Tuesday morning in a battle of Top-10’s on both the men’s and women’s side. The No. 3 Saint Leo women’s team will take on UWF’s No. 6 squad, while the No.7 Lions men’s team will take on the No. 4 Argos.
  • The men’s team is led by freshman Alberto Barroso-Campos who went 8-0 last week, winning four singles matches and four doubles matches with partner Alex Theiler. Against Concordia (N.Y.), the duo, who is ranked No. 7 in the nation for doubles, took down the No. 1 doubles pair. In the same match, Barroso-Campos took down the No. 9 nationally ranked individual from Concordia (N.Y.) as well.
  • On the women’s side, the effort has been balanced, as different players have been asked to step up at different times. In a 6-3 win over Northeastern State, Isabella Robbiani played both the No. 1 singles and doubles, and found success in both.
  • West Florida comes into the match with an 8-1 record on the women’s side with their lone loss coming to No. Lynn, while on the men’s side, the Argo’s are 10-0.

GAME NOTES

  • No. 11 Lions host No. 15 Caldwell in a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 11am. Saint Leo enters at 21-1 overall while Caldwell enters at 3-3.
  • Saint Leo swept Sunshine State Conference foe Lynn in a three game series over the weekend with a 6-0 final on Friday, and then 2-0 in the first game of the doubleheader and 9-1 (5 innings) in game two. Earlier in the week, the Lions defeated Southwest Minnesota state in both games Wednesday, game one 8-0 (5 innings) // game two 9-1 (6 innings).
  • Lions’ pitchers Stephanie Adkins, Alana Tabel and Samatha Tyler all picked up wins as Adkins moved to 8-1 on the year, Tabel is now 8-0, while Tyler is 5-0. Tyler leads the staff in ERA with a 0.20 in 35 innings pitched, where Tabel is at 0.30 ERA in 47.1 IP and Adkins at 0.35 ERA in 59.2 IP.
  • On the week, Danielle Bottley led in batting average ending the week with a .571 in four games played going 4-of-7 from the plate. Rachael Heath led in RBI with 5 on the week after she went 10-of-19 on .526-batting average.
  • Caldwell enters the competition after opening up play on Friday and posting a 3-3 record with wins over Stonehill College, South New Hampshire University and Franklin Pierce University. The Cougars compete in a doubleheader Monday against Franklin Pierce and Wayne State before traveling over to Saint Leo for Tuesday’s matchups.
  • Amy Hickman is leading the Cougars from the plate hitting .636 on 14-of-22 batting. Hannah Polak leads the way with six RBI as Amber Padilla holds a 3-0 record in the circle with a 0.70 ERA.

Game Notes

  • Saint Leo baseball steps outside the Sunshine State Conference loop for two regular season games this week with home contests against Minnesota-Crookston and the University of Bridgeport. Minnesota-Crookston is on its spring break trip to Clearwater, and will face Rockhurst University prior on Monday prior to the Tuesday matchup at Saint Leo. Bridgeport played a weekend series against Bentley, and will face Bentley once more as well as a game against Tampa before playing the Lions on Wednesday.
  • The Lions will play a mid-season exhibition game on Monday evening against Major League Baseball’s Puerto Rico Spring Training Team. The team is comprised of players from Puerto Rico, selected by MLB for intensive training in an effort to spark player development in the U.S. Territory.
  • Saint Leo is coming off a weekend series with three losses to No. 1-ranked Tampa, and will use this week’s game to tune up before hosting SSC-rival Rollins College for three games this weekend at Thomas B. Southard Stadium. Lions 1B Troy Sieber put up mind-boggling numbers last week over five games, posting a .737 (14-for-19) batting average with a 1.474 slugging percentage and 11 runs batted in. Seven of his 14 hits were for extra bases: three doubles, one triple, and three home runs. Sieber currently leads the SSC in slugging percentage, is fifth in batting average, and is riding a 16-game hitting streak.
  • Several other Saint Leo players feasted on Tampa pitching over the weekend. OF Alex Mata batted .462 (6-for-13) with three RBI versus the Spartans, while IF Bryan Nunez went 5-for-11 (.455) and 3B Chase Turner hit .357 (5-for-14) against No.1-ranked Tampa to improve his season batting average to .286.

GAME NOTES

  • Saint Leo women’s lacrosse hits the road for its second trip to North Carolina to take on Pfeiffer. The Lions are currently 1-4 after a three game home-stand. Saint Leo picked up its first win, downing Gannon 11-7, before falling to Indiana (Pa.), 18-7, and #14 Queens, 20-13.
  • Freshman Kaylah Walstad is the Lions’ leading goal scorer with nine on the season, she also leads in points with 11 as she has tallied two assists. Junior Kelsey Burns follows with eight goals and an assists, while sophomore Abbie Ross has six goals and three assists.
  • Goalkeeper Rebecca Halley has tallied 49 saves this season, and is averaging 9.8 saves per game, good for 22nd in the nation.
  • Pfeiffer comes into the match-up with a 2-5 record, recording wins over Lees-McRae and Erskine.
  • The Falcons have three players with double-digit goals this season led by Cheyenne Green who has 19 goals and three assists. Gracie Herbert has tallied 15 goals, and dished out two assists, while Molly O’Friel has put 10 in the back of the net and added five assists.
  • Fans should note a time change from a 4 p.m. start to 6 p.m. start.

 GAME NOTES

  • The No. 20 Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team continues its March home-stand, hosting Colorado Mesa on Tuesday evening. The Lions are currently on a four-game winning streak, most recently topping Lees-McRae, 22-2.
  • Jake Gilmour dished out eight assists against LMC to set a new school record for assists in a single game. The previous record was help by both Ryan Harris (4/1/06) and Joe Guerin (4/19/09) with six. Gilmour is now fifth in the nation in assists per game with 2.83.
  • Dylan Yonts finds himself ranked second in the nation for goals per game after this past week as he is averaging 4.67, trailing the leader who is averaging 5.0. Yonts is up to 28 goals this season, and has dished out three assists.
  • Will Cothron also finds himself in the Top-10 nationally, for a face-off winning percentage of 69.4-percent for fifth. He is also fourth in ground balls per game, averaging 9.0. Cothron scored his first career goal in the 22-2 win over LMC.
  • Colorado Mesa enters the game 1-2, most recently falling 12-7 to SSC foe Tampa. The Mavericks are led by Steve Brandenburg who has scored nine goals, adding four assists.
