GAME NOTES

  • Saint Leo is a part of the SSC/SIAC Challenge hosted by Florida Southern.
  • The Lions will open with Clark Atlanta, a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member, at 2 P.M. on Friday, Nov. 13. Clark Atlanta is a very experienced team, fielding six seniors and two juniors.
  • CAU may have a small height advantage, fielding two players over 6-foot.
  • The Panthers were picked to finish fifth in the East Division of the SIAC. They also earned two players on the Preseason All-SIAC team in Mykala Jones and Sierra Bubb.
  • Saint Leo returns six faces to the line-ups, and adds nine newcomers.
  • In 2014-15, Saint Leo finished with a 9-18, 4-12 SSC record.
  • They return Chachi Guzman, the team’s second leading scorer, who averaged 12.2 points and 4.4 rebounds in 2014-15.
  • As a reminder to the fans, NCAA women’s basketball will now be played in a four-quarter format.

GAME NOTES

  • The last time these two teams matched up, Saint Leo topped Lynn in a 3-0 sweep behind 10 kills and 12 digs from Britt Sederholm. 
  • Lynn out-blocked the Lions 16-6, but the Lions topped the Fighting Knights in every other statistical category.
  • The Fighting Knights have four different players in their offense averaging over two kills per set, led by Cleuza Porto with 2.57.
  • Libero Katie Knight leads the team with 4.03 digs per set.
  • Saint Leo counters on the defensive end with libero Jamee Townsend, who averages 4.98 digs per set.

GAME NOTES

  • Saint Leo men’s hoops opens the 2015-16 season this weekend when it hosts the Sunshine State Conference/Gulf South Conference Challenge Classic. The event pits Saint Leo and the University of Tampa out of the SSC against traditional Gulf South powers North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville. Defending Gulf South champion UAH (23-9, 15-7 in 2014-15) enters the tournament ranked No. 12 in the NABC/Division II coaches preseason poll, and is coming off an NCAA tournament appearance to end the 2014-15 campaign – its fifth post-season bid over the past six seasons. North Alabama (13-16, 10-12) did not earn an NCAA berth in the 2015 tournament, but advanced to the NCAAs in both 2013 and 2014. Tampa (18-10, 10-6) earned the No. 3 seed for last year’s SSC Tournament, but faltered in a 91-84 loss to Nova Southeastern in the quarterfinals.
  • Friday night’s matchup against North Alabama marks the Saint Leo debut of head coach Vince Alexander. A 16-year veteran as a collegiate head coach, all of it at the Division II level, Alexander enters this season with a 285-187 career record is ranked 63rd among active D-II coaches in winning percentage (.604) and 54th in total wins. He logged a 196-113 record over his 10 seasons at USC-Aiken, prior to coming to Saint Leo, and an 89-74 mark in six campaigns at Mansfield (Pa.) University.
  • The Lions will be led by returning junior guard Marcus Dewberry, who charted 9.8 ppg and 3.4 apg last season as a sophomore, with senior guard Trey Griseck (5.9 ppg, 2.6 rpg) and redshirt sophomore forward Trail Pierce also expected to see considerable minutes. Newcomers Caleb Stewart (forward) and Tyreece Brice (guard), both transfers from USC-Aiken, will also be expected to contribute heavily for the Lions, as will Division I transfer guard Ryan Burnett. Watch for freshmen Carter Belling (guard) and Lawrence Watt (forward) to see a lot of minutes in Alexander’s fast-pace, push-the-ball-up-the-floor offense.

  • The Paine Lions will be another experienced opponent as they list four seniors and four juniors on the roster.
  • Paine was picked to finish fourth in the East Division of the SIAC, including earning one first place vote.
  • The Paine Lions earned two on the Preseason Team in Janisha Wilkerson and Tannasia Rhodes.
  • Newcomer Chelsy Springs, a 5-foot-9 small forward, led the team in the first outing of the exhibition trip with 10 points and five rebounds against Charlotte.
  • Another strong performer over the trip was returner Gabby Ortiz, a 5-foot-8 guard from Orlando, Fla. Ortiz scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in the first game against Charlotte, and then followed it up with a six point performance over nationally-ranked Duke University.

  • In the last match up, Saint Leo dominate Nova Southeastern at home to a quick 3-0 win. A total of 41 kills on a clip of .384 defined the offensive output for the Lions on the evening.
  • Britt Sederholm led the way with 10 kills, while Anna Siruckova and Hope Lemon each had eight.
  • Eight services aces for the Lions kept the visiting Sharks out of system, allowing no NSU player to record more than five kills all evening.
  • NSU is led by Dana Holger at 3.58 kills per set, Denvyer Tyler-Palmer follows with 2.87 kills per set.
  • Setter Katie Pyles is averaging 9.31 assists per set.
  • In comparison, Lions setter Ashlee Hodgskin is averaging 10.89 assists per set.

GAME NOTES

  • The Sunshine State Conference tournament most outstanding player, Rollins' Tosan Popo, leads the nation in assists at 16.
  • Rollins has a 2-0 record over Saint Leo this season, with a 2-1 win in the regular season, and a 2-0 win in the SSC Championship game.
  • Keeper Julian Grundler played both games against the Lions recorded four saves in the first match-up and nine in the SSC Championship game.
  • Saint Leo will look to get its offensive from juniors Maximilian Schulze-Geisthovel and Matthias Katerna. Schulze-Geisthovel has scored 13 goals for the Lions, adding four assists, while Katerna has scored nine goals, and added four assists.
  • Freshman James White will be the Keeper for the Lions, as he has recorded 1314 minutes in net. He has tallied 62 saves on the season. He also earned All-SSC Second Team honors, and SSC All-tournament honors as well.
