Women's Tennis Notes

  • The Saint Leo women’s tennis team takes on Florida Tech to open both the spring season and Sunshine State Conference play. The Lions host the Panthers on Wednesday at 3 p.m. They follow it up with a 3 p.m. match versus Eckerd on Thursday.
  • Saint Leo is currently ranked No. 4 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Preseason poll.
  • The Saint Leo women's tennis team was picked in third place in the 2017 Sunshine State Conference women's tennis preseason poll.
  • They return singles ITA All-American Marine Beugre-Guyot and doubles All-American Anastasia Wagner.
  • In 2016, Saint Leo went 23-3, including winning the SSC Regular Season title and finishing as NCAA National Semifinalists.
  • Florida Tech is currently 2-0 on the season after taking down Carson-Newman, 8-1, and SSC foe Eckerd, 9-0.
  • Eckerd is currently 0-1 after dropping the match to Florida Tech and will play Florida Southern on Wednesday before coming the Saint Leo for the Thursday event. 

Women's Basketball Notes

  • The Saint Leo women’s basketball team heads to Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday afternoon for a 5:30 p.m. showdown with the Sailfish. The Lions head into the match-up boasting a three-game winning streak, the first the program has had since winning the first three games of the 2014-15 season.
  • The Lions streak includes wins over Barry, 70-67, Lynn, 66-61, and Florida Tech, 70-65.
  • In the most recent outing versus Florida Tech, Saint Leo saw Chelsy Springs recorded her seventh double-double of the season as she scored a team-high 21 points and added 11 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Ragen Dotson added 16 points, going a perfect seven for seven from the free throw line. Asia Royster recorded her fourth-straight double-digit performance, scoring 12 points. She added seven rebounds and five steals. Saint Leo forced FIT into 21 turnovers.
  • Springs leads the Lions offensively as she averages 15.7 points per game, and adds 8.5 rebounds per game. Dotson follows at 11.7 per game.
  • Over the last four games, Royster has come into her own, averaging 17.0 points per game over the stretch, adding 7.0 rebounds and 2.75 steals per game.
  • As a team, the Lions are averaging 66.4 points per game on 38.9-percent shooting.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic enters the game with an 8-14 overall record and a 4-11 record against Sunshine State Conference opponents. PBA is a provisional member, but they are accumulating a record against SSC teams for post-season seeding.
  • Both Hannah Grim and Ayanna Holmes lead the Sailfish with 14.9 points per game. Holmes adds a team-high 8.9 rebounds.
  • The Sailfish are shooting 40-percent on the season while averaging 66.2 rebounds per game.

Men's Basketball Notes

  • Saint Leo heads to Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday for a midweek contest with the Sailfish. The Lions enter the game at 12-12, 6-8 SSC as the Sailfish are 11-11, 7-8 SSC. PBA holds the season series having won in Saint Leo 78-77 on Dec. 30.
  • Saint Leo enters after a 97-76 rout of Florida Tech on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Lions were led by five guys who scored double-figures led by Antoine Tobias who was red hot from the field. Tobias finished the game 10-for-11 from the field and 4-of-4 from downtown while adding two points on two attempts from the free throw line. Tobias hauled in game-high eight rebounds as well in the win. In the Lions first 15 points of the game, Tobias was responsible for 11 of them.
  • Marcus Dewberry was the next closest guy as he scored 19 points but more impressively dished out 14 assists, a career-high, for a double-double.
  • Justin Satchell and Tyreece Brice chipped in 15 points apiece where Junior Searcy added 11 off the bench.
  • In the win over the Panthers, the Lions shot 69.1% (38-55) from the field, 56% (14-25) from downtown and went a perfect 100% (7-7) from the free throw line.
  • On the year, Dewberry leads the team with 19.6 points per game (ppg) where Justin Satchell is second on the team at 16.1 ppg. Brice is third on the squad in points per game at 12.0. Satchell leads the team with a 7.1 rebounds per game average.
  • As a team, the Lions average 79.5 ppg and hold opponents to 78.2 ppg.
  • In the SSC rankings: Dewberry is third in scoring (19.6 ppg), Satchell is sixth in scoring (16.1 ppg) and is eighth in rebounding (7.1 RPG). Satchell and Dewberry are in the top-10 in field goal percentage as Satchell is seventh (.503) and Dewberry is 10th (.477). Dewberry is sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.399) and leads the conference in free throw percentage (.906). Dewberry ranks fourth in assists (5.0 APG) where Brice is sixth (4.1 apg). Brice is third in assist to turnover ratio (2.2). Tobias ranks ninth in blocks per game (0.7) with a total of 14 on the year. Dewberry ranks fifth in steals per game (1.6).
  • In the national rankings (Feb. 13): Dewberry is 13th in the country in free throw percentage (.906).
  • Palm Beach Atlantic enters Wednesday having upset No. 10 Barry 76-75 in West Palm Beach on Feb. 8. The Sailfish knocked off the Buccaneers after scoring 47 points in the first half and held off a feisty Barry team that score 41 points to PBA’s 29 in the second half. In the win, four Sailfish scored in double-figures led by Dakota Zinser who had game-high 18 points. Milos Kostic scored 15 points off the bench as Grant gullet scored 14 points and Michael Stone chipped in with 10 to round out the double-digit scorers.
  • On the year, the Sailfish have five average double-digits led by De’Ondre Jackson who has played in nine games averaging 17 ppg. Bakari Warthen is second at 14.1 ppg and Grant Gullett third at 12.0. Malek Barber beats out Dakota Zinser barley at 10.4 ppg and 10.3 ppg, respectively.
  • Lucas Morales leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 rebounds per game.
  • As a team, Palm Beach Atlantic averages 77.3 ppg and allows opponents to outscore them with 78.5 ppg.
  • In the national rankings (Feb. 13): Barber ranks 22nd in the country in offensive rebounds per game (3.45). 

Men's Tennis Notes

  • The No. 2 Saint Leo men’s tennis team comes into the weekend with a 2-0 record after taking down No. 4 Lander, 5-4, and SSC foe Florida Tech, 8-1.

  •  The Lions host Eckerd on Thursday at 3 p.m.

     
  • Saint Leo freshman Vincent Suillerot leads the Lions with two doubles wins with partner Thomas Grinberg, and he has two singles win at the No. 2 position.

     
  • Grinberg has added two singles wins as well, winning by default against Lander, and taking a 6-4, 6-2 win against Florida Tech.

     
  • Charles Benet also is undefeated so far this season, snagging the match winner against Lander at No. 6 singles, and adding a win at No. 4 singles against Florida Tech. He also won his doubles pairing with Francisco Aparicio against the Panthers.

  • Eckerd will enter Thursday’s match with a 0-1 record after falling to Florida Tech, 7-2
