SAINT LEO, Fla. – Barbara Wilson, Saint Leo's head athletic trainer since 1999, has been designated the department's senior woman administrator (SWA) by Francis X. Reidy, Saint Leo's director of athletics.
The senior woman administrator is the highest ranking female in each NCAA athletics department, and is a requirement under the NCAA's rules and management structure. In her new capacity as SWA, Wilson is tasked with representing the female experience and perspective at the institutional, conference, and national levels, and with supporting women's interests within Saint Leo Athletics.
Wilson will continue to serve as the department's assistant athletic director for Sports Medicine.
"This role is a perfect fit for Barb, and, in many ways, it is formalizing a role she has long held in our department on an informal basis," said Reidy. "She has proven to be a vocal advocate over the years for student-athlete interests, especially our women student-athletes, and has taken a mentoring role to many young women professionals who have recently come through our department."
"I am confident Barb will be tremendously successful in this new role on our department's senior leadership team," added Reidy.
Wilson came to Saint Leo in August 1999, after working at a sports medicine clinic in Binghamton, N.Y. She currently oversees a staff of four full-time athletic trainers, and coordinates the sports medicine coverage of nearly 350 student-athletes across 19 intercollegiate teams.
Wilson has also taken a lead role over recent years in coordinating life skills sessions and speakers for Saint Leo's student-athletes, to help prepare them for the demands of the Division II student-athlete experience and their time beyond college.
A 1988 graduate of the State University of New York College at Cortland, with a Bachelor degree in physical education and a minor in athletic training, Wilson received a Master's degree in physical education with a concentration in sports medicine from Western Michigan University in 1990. She previously served as the head athletic trainer at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, prior to returning to her hometown of Binghamton in 1990.
