SAINT LEO, Fla. – Francis X. Reidy and the Saint Leo Department of Athletics have announced the hiring of Peter Lefresne as the new Director of Athletic Communications. Joining the Lions from the University of Maine at Farmington, Lefresne brings over 20 years of experience to the Athletic Communications Department at Saint Leo.
“We are thrilled welcome Pete and his family to the Saint Leo community,” said Athletic Director Francis Reidy of the appointment. “We are fortunate we could add someone with Pete's experience to lead our expanding Athletic Communications office.”
Lefresne joined the Athletic Department at UMaine-Farmington from Division III Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., where he served as the Sports Information Director and Assistant Athletic Director for five years. In that capacity, he his responsibilities focused on directing all public and media relations for the athletic department, coordinating events, and managing corporate sponsorships.
“I am excited about joining the Athletics staff at Saint Leo University, and I'm very much looking forward to being able to contribute in a meaningful way to the experience of over 300 Lion student-athletes,” said Lefresne. “This program has enjoyed considerable success in recent years, and I’m eager to join the work of building on Saint Leo’s brand by showcasing the athletic and academic achievements of its athletes.”
Among his accomplishments at Juniata, Lefresne guided the implementation of a new visual identity suite, the re-design of Juniata’s in-house athletics website in 2008 and the out-sourcing of the site to PrestoSports in 2011, the introduction of streaming video webcasting through a partnership with Pack Network, and the expansion of the video content on Juniata’s athletics website. Lefresne also developed a partnership with WMRF radio in August 2010 for a weekly live segment with Juniata coaches on its morning show, providing reach into four counties in the central Pennsylvania area.
Lefresne joined Juniata after a three-year hiatus from the sports information field, during which he worked in university relations and marketing at the University of Maine at Machias and at Algoma University in Canada.
An Ottawa, Ontario native, Lefresne was a member of the Athletic Media Relations staff at the University of Maine in Orono from 1999 to 2004, including a stint as the Interim Director during the 2002-03 academic year. During that time, he worked with Black Bear football, women's basketball, baseball, and men's ice hockey teams that advanced to NCAA Division I tournament play. He also worked at Virginia Military Institute (1992-95, 1997-99) as an Assistant Sports Information Director, and at Old Dominion University (1995-97) as the Director of Athletics Publications.
Lefresne graduated from Old Dominion with a Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and concentrations in journalism, graphic design, and history. He is a member of both the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He was honored by the AVCA's Grant Burger Award program in 2009 (Division III men's volleyball, EIVA), 2010 (Division III women's volleyball, Mid-Atlantic Region), and 2012 (Division III men's volleyball, Continental Volleyball Conference).
